• State Authorization

Baylor University has determined that the Master of Science (M.S.) in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP), offered through the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), meets the educational requirements for professional licensure in many states and U.S. territories.  These states are indicated in the chart below as "MEETS".  If a determination has not yet been made, the state or territory is listed as "DOES NOT MEET" until further notice.

It must be noted that individual state licensing boards may require additional steps beyond completion of our academic curriculum and supervised clinical experiences. These requirements may include but are not limited to post-graduation examinations or supervised experience, application and licensure fees, criminal background checks, fingerprinting, reference checks, additional trainings, and continuing education for license renewal.

Because there are state-by-state differences, students who relocate during the program are required to notify the program in accordance with the Student Location Change Policy by updating their address in BearWeb.

In addition to state licensure, many states require school-based credentials or certifications to practice as a speech-language pathologist in public schools. These requirements are established by each state's Department or Board of Education and may vary by state or school district. Students are encouraged to review these requirements carefully. Baylor University's Speech-Language Pathology program provides academic coursework and supervised clinical experiences that satisfy state education board requirements, including clinical hour requirements; however, if your intended state requires specific school-based experiences, it is your responsibility to communicate those requirements to your clinical placement team so appropriate placements can be arranged whenever possible.

Because state licensure and school certification requirements are established and revised by individual state licensing boards and departments of education, they are subject to change at any time. Although the Baylor CSD Department periodically updates this information via the CSD State-by-State Chart (found here: https://baylor.app.box.com/v/CSDstatebystate), it is the student’s responsibility to verify the current licensure and school certification requirements for their state or territory, confirm that our program satisfies current educational requirements, and identify any additional requirements before and during enrollment in the residential or online SLP graduate program. Students with questions regarding licensure or certification should contact the appropriate state licensing board or department of education directly and consult their designated SLP Program Director for additional guidance.
