Graduate Student Complaints or Grievances
The Graduate School has the important role of advocating for all graduate students. In this role, we provide students with resources they need to be successful. This document outlines resources for graduate student complaints and grievances. The Report It website offers a compendium of resources for submitting complaints.
Students may have grievances for a variety of reasons, from issues with grading on assignments or in courses, to concerns about program or department policies and procedures, to issues with faculty, staff, or other students.
If a graduate student has a complaint or grievance against a faculty or staff member, and if the student and faculty or staff member cannot come to an informal resolution, the student should consult with the Graduate Program Director (GPD), then the Department Chair. If the GPD or Department Chair are among those with which the student has a grievance, the student may reach out to the Associate Dean in their college or school or the Associate Dean in the Graduate School.
List of Resources for Complaints
- Course, Program, or Department Policies/Procedures: Graduate Program Director, Department Chair
- Grades on assignments or in courses: Academic Appeals Policy and Procedure
- Actions that impact individuals or groups: Ombuds to Students
- Unfair Treatment: Equity, Civil Rights, and Title IX Office
Institutional Complaint Processes
The Report It website describes various types of complaints and links to information on these specialized complaint processes, including policies, forms, and online reporting systems.
If a student is unsure about which office should receive the written student complaint, he or she may contact or submit an online reporting form to the Ombuds for Students.
