Marriage & Family Therapy (MFT)
Baylor University has made a good-faith determination regarding whether the Master of Marriage and Family Therapy program will fulfill state/territory educational requirements for professional licenses.
Some state licensing boards require additional requirements beyond education, which may include (but are not limited to): additional post-graduation examinations or experience, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks, reference checks, fingerprint submissions, etc. Continuing education may also be required for maintenance of certification/licensure. Make sure you understand and review any additional requirements prior to enrolling in the Master of Marriage and Family Therapy program.
State licensing requirements are always subject to change at the discretion of the state licensing board. The University will routinely update this page, but we strongly recommend you inquire with the applicable state board to confirm your eligibility for licensure prior to enrolling in the Master of Marriage and Family Therapy program. For any questions regarding licensure, please contact the state/territory agency directly.
Licensing requirements vary by state/territory and relocating could impact whether you will meet eligibility requirements for licensure. For any questions about relocation eligibility, contact the agency where you desire licensure before relocating to ensure that you will be eligible for licensure or reciprocity.
Carefully review the educational prerequisites for your intended state/territory of licensure and whether our program meets those requirements for licensure. Use the agency contact information provided below to clarify or confirm any requirements.
If questions remain after reviewing the information provided below, contact your program advisor. While the University can provide initial guidance, it is ultimately your responsibility to continually check with the state/territory where you intend to seek licensure to confirm all licensing/certification requirements.
The State Licensing Requirements should indicate whether the program curriculum Meets the requirements in these states and US Territories, is Unable to Determine, or Does NOT Meet them.
Explanation of Licensure Determination Categories
Meets Requirements: A determination of “Meets Requirements” is made based on a review of the Baylor University Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) curriculum, including required coursework, total credit hours, and supervised practicum/internship requirements, in comparison with the statutory and regulatory language published by each state licensing board.
Many states specify required coursework categories (e.g., family systems theory, assessment and treatment of individuals, couples, and families, ethics and professional practice) as well as minimum clinical training requirements such as direct client contact hours, relational therapy hours, and supervision structure. When Baylor’s curriculum and clinical training appear to align with these requirements, the program may determine that the educational requirements for provisional licensure are met. *However, most states conduct an independent review of transcripts, course descriptions, and practicum documentation during the licensure application process. Because the Baylor MFT program is new and has not yet had graduates apply for licensure in most states, final determinations are ultimately made by the state licensing board.
Does Not Meet Requirements: A determination of “Does Not Meet Requirements” is made when state statutes or regulations clearly require program components that exceed or differ from the Baylor MFT program requirements. Common examples include: Practicum or internship requirements exceeding the program’s clinical training structure (e.g., states requiring 500 or more direct client contact hours or higher relational therapy hour thresholds); Required coursework not included in the Baylor curriculum (e.g., courses in personality theory, psychopharmacology, teletherapy, or additional human development coursework); Degree credit hour requirements beyond the Baylor program’s 60-credit structure. When such requirements are clearly specified and not met by the program’s curriculum or clinical training structure, the program determines that the educational requirements for provisional licensure are not met.
Unable to Determine: A determination of “Unable to Determine” is used when available state statutes or regulations do not clearly indicate whether the Baylor MFT curriculum satisfies the educational requirements for licensure. In many states, licensing boards evaluate coursework individually during the licensure application process, often reviewing official transcripts, university catalog descriptions, and course syllabi to determine whether specific content requirements are met. When Baylor coursework appears potentially aligned with required categories but cannot be confirmed without a formal board review, the program lists the state as “Unable to Determine.”
Students seeking licensure in these jurisdictions are encouraged to consult the relevant state licensing board and the Baylor MFT program director or advisor for additional guidance.
The State Licensing Requirements should indicate whether the program curriculum Meets the requirements in these states and US Territories or Does NOT Meets them.
